Working in Childcare

A career in childcare is very rewarding, helping children to develop through play and learning. There is no typical day in the life of a childcare provider as all children are unique and have different needs. The age range of children can be from birth to teens and often, for example in the role of a childminder could involve the development of the child throughout their whole childhood. Childcare also involves working with children who have additional needs. Childcare comes in various forms including childminders, full day care, playgroups, Cylch Meithrin and out of school clubs. All Childcare settings include an element of Welsh language awareness within their day to day planning.

We know through research, that early intervention of good quality childcare especially in the early years has many advantages to the child's development. Highly skilled and trained childcare providers impact on this development. Continuity of staff has also a positive impact on the children. Becoming a qualified childcare worker requires the individual to have skills in literacy and numeracy along with many personal attributes.

To meet with the requirements of the Childcare Act 2006, Workforce Development aims to ensure that there is a sufficient supply of qualified and competent childcare workers in Cardiff in order to support childcare needs of working parents and those in training or education, thus improving and playing an important part in the economic growth and prosperity of Cardiff.

What do we do to support a career in Childcare?

Workforce Development offers training, advice and guidance to the non-maintained childcare sector within the Cardiff local authority. Training is aimed at CIW-registered childcare providers, as well as those looking to start their own registered childcare business. This includes childminders, full daycare, playgroups, Cylch Meithrin and out of school clubs. Training is split into 2 categories - Legal and Regulatory training and Continuous Professional Development . All training delivered is closely monitored and evaluated ensuring that it is of high quality and meets or exceeds the expectations of CIW. We work with CIW to ensure that training delivered is linked to the National Minimum Standards required for the registration and inspection of registered childcare providers.

We conduct an annual training needs consultation with all existing childcare providers in Cardiff to ensure that we listen and react to their training needs.

An annual training programme is produced which aims to offer accessible training courses. The training is conducted mainly in the evenings and during the weekends. All Cardiff childcare providers who have registered to our on-line booking and payment system are provided with log on details to enable them to book training for themselves and staff. Payment for the courses is made through a card payment system when booking.

Since 2014/15 Workforce Development has been funded through the Flying Start programme.

Gweithio mewn Gofal Plant

Mae gyrfa mewn gofal plant yn werthfawr iawn, yn helpu plant i ddatblygu trwy chwarae a dysgu. Does dim diwrnod nodweddiadol ym mywyd darparwr gofal plant oherwydd bod plant i gyd yn unigryw ac y mae arnynt anghenion gwahanol. Gall ystod oedran y plant fod o eni tan eu harddegau ac yn aml, er enghraifft gall rôl y gofalwr plant gynnwys datblygiad plentyn trwy gydol ei blentyndod cyfan. Mae gofal plant hefyd yn cynnwys gweithio â phlant ag anghenion ychwanegol. Mae aml i ffurf ar ofal plant, yn cynnwys gofalwyr plant, gofal diwrnod llawn, grwpiau chwarae, Cylch Meithrin a chlybiau y tu allan i’r ysgol. Mae pob lleoliad gofal plant yn cynnwys elfen o ymwybyddiaeth o’r Gymraeg yn eu cynllun dyddiol.

Rydym yn gwybod o waith ymchwil, bod ymyrraeth gynnar gan ofal plant o safon dda yn dod â llawer o fanteision i ddatblygiad plentyn, yn arbennig yn y blynyddoedd cynnar. Mae darparwyr gofal plant cymwys iawn ac wedi eu hyfforddi yn effeithio ar y datblygu hwn. Mae cysondeb staff hefyd yn effeithio’n gadarnhaol ar y plant. Mae dod yn weithiwr gofal plant cymwys yn gofyn bod gan rywun sgiliau llythrennedd a rhifedd yn ogystal ag amryw o rinweddau personol.

I ateb gofynion Deddf Plant 2006, mae’n nod gan dîm Datblygu’r Gweithlu i geisio sicrhau bod digon o weithwyr cymwys yng Nghaerdydd i gynorthwyo anghenion gofal plant rhieni sy’n gweithio a’r rhai sydd mewn hyfforddiant neu addysg, a thrwy hynny wella a bod yn rhan bwysig o dwf economaidd a ffyniant Caerdydd.

Sut rydym yn cynorthwyo gyrfa mewn Gofal Plant?

Mae Datblygu’r Gweithle’n cynnig cyngor, canllaw a hyfforddiant i’r sector gofal plant nas ariennir yn gyhoeddus. Mae’r hyfforddiant wedi ei anelu ar gyfer darparwyr gofal plant cofrestredig yn ogystal â’r rhai sydd am gychwyn busnes gofal plant cofrestredig eu hunain. Mae hyn yn cynnwys gofalwyr plant, gofal diwrnod llawn, grwpiau chwarae, Cylch Meithrin a chlybiau y tu allan i’r ysgol. Rhennir yr hyfforddiant yn dri chategori: hyfforddiant Cyfreithiol a Rheoliadol, Datblygiad Proffesiynol Parhaus a Chymwysterau Cenedlaethol. Caiff yr hyfforddiant a roddir ei fonitro’n agos a'i werthuso er mwyn sicrhau ei fod o safon uchel ac yn cyrraedd neu’n rhagori ar ddisgwyliadau Arolygiaeth Gofal a Gwasanaethau Cymdeithasol Cymru (AGC). Rydym yn gweithio gydag AGC i sicrhau bod yr hyfforddiant a gynigir yn gysylltiedig â’r Safonau Gofynnol Cenedlaethol trwy arolygu’r darparwyr gofal plant cofrestredig.

Rydym yn cynnal ymgynghoriad ar anghenion hyfforddi blynyddol gyda’r holl ddarparwyr gofal plant yng Nghaerdydd er mwyn sicrhau ein bod yn gwrando ac yn ymateb i'w hanghenion hyfforddi.

Cynhyrchir rhaglen hyfforddi flynyddol gyda'r nod o gynnig cyrsiau hyfforddi hygyrch. Mae’r hyfforddiant gyda'r nos ac yn ystod y penwythnos gan amlaf. Caiff yr holl ddarparwyr gofal plant yng Nghaerdydd sydd wedi cofrestru â’n system archebu a thalu ar-lein fanylion mewn-gofrestru er mwyn iddynt allu archebu hyfforddiant ar eu cyfer nhw a’u staff. Telir am y cyrsiau trwy system dalu â cherdyn wrth archebu.

Ers 2014/15 mae Datblygu’r Gweithlu wedi ei ariannu trwy raglen Dechrau'n Deg.
